This project looks at the problem of designing service networks for transportation carriers with consolidation (e.g., railway companies, LTL (less than truck load) trucking companies, maritime transport companies). This tactical planning process targets the integrated treatment of the problems of service selection and scheduling, load consolidation, vehicle classification, and freight routing. It also deals with balancing the workloads of the system terminals and with building empty vehicle repositioning strategies. The objective is to set up a transportation plan and timetable that will insure the efficient use of resources with the goal of satisfying customer demands profitably at the desired level of service quality.
