Project 202. - Packing and loading

Principal researchers : T.G. CRAINIC, W.REI
Collaborators : G. Perboli, R. Tadei

Vehicle and container loading provides an interesting challenge that is both methodological and practical (Project 201). Methodologically, we are dealing with multi-dimensional bin packing problems, which are hard combinatorial problems. Practically, we have to account for a great number of factors, for example: load superposition rules; load distribution and load balancing in two, three or more dimensions; and unloading order. We are working on problems with a large number of dimensions and heterogeneous vehicles/containers. Our research targets problem characterization (e.g., bounds) and the development of efficient exact and meta-heuristic solution methods.
