Electronic exchanges — of information, data or funds, for example — are increasingly central to commercial exchanges and the production of goods and services. This is what is commonly called “e-business”. In transportation, the information technology hardware and software and the decision-support tools used in e-business are similar to those used in Intelligent Transportation Systems. In this context, electronic markets, or electronic auctions, play a more and more important role in the exchanges between companies. We are particularly interested in bilateral markets (e.g., container and network capacity auctions), where bids can be combinatorial.
